Letter form a Foreinger student

As a current nursing student and a prospective med-school or DNP
candidate I knew it would be a good experience to volunteer abroad. I
am very active in the Hillel at the University of Minnesota so I
naturally looked for opportunities through international Hillels. I
got in contact with Mijael through the 'Big Family Program' through
Argentina Hillel. The program looks for places for you to live while
you volunteer abroad. Mijael also got me in contact with a doctor
named Romi who helped me find a health center to do my volunteer work.

Mijael found me a place to live (with the help of a wonderful lady
named Jasmine) and it was a perfect fit. I was staying with an older
lady named Fanny who spoke very little English. This helped me learn
more Spanish and we spent many conversations laughing at our own
miscommunication. She always made sure I had enough to eat, that I
wore a jacket when I went outside, and that I was having a good stay.
I met a lot of her family and friends as well and I think being in a
host family helped me immerse in the culture rather than stay in a
dorm with other Americans.

My volunteer work was at Centre De Salud in San Telmo. This is a
government subsidized health care program for children. The residents
helped teach me how to do general assessments, listen to lung and
heart sounds, and chart height and weights. It was very hands on and I
learned an incredible amount every day. A lot of my learning happened
though general observation as well. The residents were all extremely
nice and patient and it truly was an incredible experience.

Jasmine helped connect me with the 'Baby Help Program' through JOINT.
The program offers free daycare and other assistance for Jewish
families in need. I volunteered there three hours a day and was able
to connect with a lot of the children. It was truly an incredible
experience being a part of something that helped so many people.
Everyone at the center was extremely helpful and made me feel at home.

I would like to thank Mijael and all of Argentina Hillel for the
wonderful opportunity that was given to me. From the very first e-mail
Mijael was a huge help and without this help my trip would not have
happened. The trip helped broaden my understanding of global health
care and also the connectivity and helping hand of the Jewish people.
My two weeks in Argentina were truly amazing and I encourage everyone
who has the opportunity to come! If you would like any other
information please do not hesitate to contact me. My e-mail is
zada0002@gmail.com. Thank-you,

Amir Zadaka

Big Family Program

HILLEL’ S BIG FAMILY PROJECT

1) Introduction:
The most important factor for promoting peace along the World is the exchange and contact of different cultures. The world turns smaller and friendlier once we get to see that all human beings –no matter where they come from- look for the same basic elements: a healthy environment that let them and their children live a rich and joyful life. As Jews, we learn from our “Arevim SE La SE”, that ever Jew is responsible for the rest of them and also that “Am Israel, Am Ejad”.

The Exchange of young people gives thounsands of students the opportunity of being in contact with people from other continents, allowing them to know each other s culture and share the values of judaísmo, with it s tastes and traditions that make as one all over the World. We believe that this is essential for bringing people togheter all over the globe, helping us to lear how to understand and respect each other

2) Responsibilities and Guaranties:

Hosts
The key stone of Hillel’s Big Family Project is the hospitality based on the idea of “opening your house’s door”. The hosts of Hillel offer accommodation for travellers that have been approved on their Hillel back home, or by a direct recommendation sent to Hillel Argentina. The hosts must have enough space for the student to live comfortably, be able to study and get to share some quality time with the members of the family. The hosts are not responsible of supporting economically the student. It is not mandatory that the family speaks English, but it will depend on the student and the family’s request and interests.

Guests
All the guests that participate on our Big Family Program must be university students, that went through an interview or have solid references from the Hillel were they live of by the Hillel Staff of Hillel Argentina, to make sure that they are responsible, open minded and can be trusted by the family.
Once the student have been approved to participate on the program, he’ll receive a letter from Hillel Argentina and a contract sign by a member of our staff, this document will be the “passport” to be welcomed into their new family.

3) Types of plans:

With charge
The student pays a certain amount of Money for the accommodation, pre-fixed on the Program that brings them to Buenos Aires. This type of plan includes food.

Short term: up to a month.
Long term: More than a month and up to one year.

Free of charge
The families can host a student for free, with the goal of getting to know a student from abroad and have an intercultural Exchange.

Short term: up to a month.
Long term: More than a month and up to one year.

4) Commodities on the house and terms of the hosting:

They will be analyzed and solved by the family and the student, Hillel makes the contact between them but does not intervene on the prices and the rest of the conditions.
